A Conversation with Salcombe Distillery: Leading The Way in Flavour-Forward Spirit Making
There’s nothing we like more than a good old fashioned distillery story. We asked the folks over at the Salcombe Distillery on the South Devon coast. Read on to find out all about how they’re leading the way in distilling methods and flavour-forward spirit-making! Not only do Salcombe Distillery's (award-winning) gin taste fantastic, but every sale from Boroughbox also contributes to Salcombe's effort of cleaning the ocean!
Co-founders, Angus Lugsdin and Howard Davies met teaching children to sail at the Island Cruising Club (ICC) in Salcombe; 20 years on and the old boat repair yard that used to belong to the ICC has been converted into the headquarters for Salcombe Distilling Company. Inspired by the coastal vitality of Salcombe and its shipbuilding heritage, they created a multi award-winning gin, with flavours inspired 19th century Salcombe 'fruiters' Sailing Vessels that brought exotic fruit into Devon from the Azores, West Indies and Mediterranean. Fun fact: Salcombe is one of the few distilleries in the world accessible by boat!
I would say there have been three main challenges. The first is holding our ground with regard to our brand positioning and price point. It is very tempting as a young business grows to lower your prices to meet a requirement or gain a listing, but it is a slippery slope and very difficult to put your prices back up. We very rarely price promote and have actually found that being protective of our brand and price point, gives our customers reassurance of the outstanding quality of our brand and for trade customers it allows them to continue to make good margins.
It has made us even more aware of the long term value of e-commerce as a channel and the need to engage digitally with our customers, both trade and consumer alike. Customers are even more brand aware than they were previously and have taken the time to engage with our brand, which has been fantastic to see.
We have always had great partnerships with a number of complementary brands and are continuing to build this B2B channel.
