#BoroughBoxHeroes: Shouting about small business dads who sell on our marketplace.

At BoroughBox, we’re all about connecting you with independent, artisanal producers so that you can enjoy the best food and drink out there and in the process support countless small businesses!

In the lead up to Father’s Day on June 20th, we’re shouting about the BoroughBox shops run by dads. Because, not only do we want every Dad to get something they actually want on Father’s Day, but we want to celebrate every hard working hero that’s partnered with BoroughBox and sells on our site.

This week, we asked three of these #BoroughBoxHeroes a couple of short questions about their businesses and fatherhood and they came back with some great stories!

Lee isn't just a #BoroughBox hero, he's a environmental activist inspired by his son's love for sea turtles. When it comes to rum, though, his multi award-winning signature blends are world-class.

Sip easy too, with every single bottle generating a donation enough to save up to ten hatchlings. The money is being invested in local, community-based initiatives to protect key nesting sites and save sea turtles across the Caribbean and Latin America.

What was the initial inspiration for Lost Years signature rum?

The idea for Lost Years was hatched on a family holiday in Jamaica back in autumn 2019.  I'd been out visiting a rum distillery one day and my wife and two children had been at the resort hearing about the local sea turtle nesting site and how endangered these ancient creatures are.

We got talking over dinner and the idea for a rum brand dedicated to saving sea turtles started to form. My son, Billy, has adored sea life and particularly sea turtles for as long as he can remember, so he was very much the inspiration. It took us about 18 months to turn the idea into reality.

Tell us about your most memorable day as a dad!

That has to be the day my daughter, Elliot, was born in 2007. Becoming a dad for the first time was an incredible experience and I was overwhelmed with emotion - so much so that I forgot to fill the car with petrol and had to spend the night sleeping in the hospital car park!

Where do you see your brand in 5 years?

Lost Years is a relatively new brand - we launched during lockdown in November 2020 - but we have big ambitions! In five years time I would love to see our rum being sold globally and for it to be seen as one of the leaders of the rum renaissance. Most importantly though, I'd love to be celebrating saving many hundreds of thousands of endangered sea turtles.

What’s your ideal type of Father’s Day foodie gift?

My love of rum began at a very early age - as a child back in the mid 70s when my late grandfather would treat me to rum and raisin ice creams. So I think a year's supply of that would be just perfect!

What was the initial inspiration for The Gluten Free Bakery?

Our original idea was to set up a Gluten Free (my business partner has Coeliac Disease) brasserie where the fact it was gluten free would have no bearing on the food you were eating, but we could not find any decent bread that could be used in the brasserie, so we set out to make the best bread we could with the same thought behind it, Gluten Free without Compromise.

Tell us about your most memorable day as a dad!

With three children there are many moments. My 10 year old boy is a keen footballer and after his first tournament  at about 6 years old, I remember tucking up in bed and telling him how proud of him I was (they won), and he told me how proud of me he was (I managed his team). It was very sweet.

We are looking to be at the forefront of anyone’s mind who wants/needs gluten free, be that out of necessity or as a lifestyle choice. When anyone thinks gluten free bread, the obvious choice is The Gluten Free Bakery.

What’s your ideal type of Father’s Day foodie gift?

I love to snack, a terrible habit but anything that involves snacking with a nice drink is heaven. Maybe I should have been Spanish, Tapas is such a great way to spend time with friends (or on your own!!)

Cashain - Kromanti Rum

Cashain is all about bringing the magic of his Fatherland to rest of the world. The son of a windrush immigrant, his rum evokes tropical memories from the the Caribbean island of Carriacou (in Cashain's words, "the dot above Grenada").

A tropical paradise where an oral history has led to secret recipes and mysterious ancient traditions sounds like the perfect inspiration for a bottle of rum... doesn't it?

What was the initial inspiration for Kromanti Rum?

I come from a small island in the caribbean that has retained many african traditions through oral history, customs and family secrets. The desire to modernise these traditions and share with the world is the driver behind the business.

Tell us about your most memorable day as a dad!

I told my children about the times when I packed my bags and came to London from Yorkshire as a student. Times were hard and I had to survive on one packet of custard creams a day for a week as I had no money. They bought me a packet for my 40th birthday.

What’s your ideal type of Father’s Day foodie gift?

A gift which makes the receiver feel loved and held in the arms of their loved ones even when they are not there.

I am keen to move past retail and white labelling for other companies who are interested in a luxury product associated with their business. Positioning and story is crucial for this market and I want to offer small batch solutions for boutique businesses.
