Celebrating Father's Day With Our #BoroughBoxHeroes: Shops Run By Dads!

At BoroughBox, we’re all about connecting you with independent, artisanal producers so that you can enjoy the best food and drink out there and in the process support countless small businesses!

In honour of Father’s Day on June 20th, we’re shouting about the BoroughBox shops run by dads. Because not only do we want every Dad to get something they actually want on Father’s Day, but we want to celebrate every hard working hero that’s partnered with BoroughBox and sells on our site.

This week, we asked three of these #BoroughBoxHeroes a couple of short questions about their businesses and fatherhood and they came back with some great stories!

Former Ironman Joe has, since having his kids, swapped the triathlons for great tasting nut, fruit and seed mixes! Inspired by his own want for a tasty alternative to crisps while training, Real Handful is a family-friendly brand bursting with great ideas. Whether in a lunchbox or a perfect pick-me-up on a hilltop walk, Joe's delicious, vegan-friendly snacks are the perfect addition to your food cupboard.

Before I had kids and free time was not the most precious commodity in existence I used to compete in Ironman triathlons. 'Compete' is probably a bit of a strong word but even at amateur level the sport led me to improve my education around snacking and nutrition. I found protein bars a bit heavy and so, looking for more natural sources of protein and fibre, started to introduce fruit, nut, seed and chocolate trail mixes into my diet. I felt that these kinds of snacks needed to be celebrated more and we created Real Handful to champion nut, fruit & seed snacking by making it more fun, tasty and accessible.

Well after lockdown I now have my Ooni pizza oven sat alongside my BBQ so my main course game is on point. For me it's anything that combines snacking and drinking for a bit of evening relaxation. I've virtually given up alcohol over the past few years so love discovering any new 'low & no' lagers with some delicious Real Handful baked nuts to accompany.

Hmmm to avoid a cliche'd "the day they were born" answer I think the most memorable was a brisk lockdown walk we took last summer when in the space of 10 minutes the sky darkened and we were slammed with torrential rain on the side of steep cliff in the peak district. With the kids in tears we had to shepherd them to the top of the hill and a small cafe for a warm hot chocolate whilst I had the delightful task of running back through the mud for half an hour to go get our car and find a way to drive back a different route to collect them. As a family we seem to often find ourselves in these ridiculous situations in which we're lacking wet weather clothing or a bottle of water on a roasting hot day!

Our plan is to make healthier snacking more fun, delicious and affordable. So, with that in mind, we'd love to see the availability and size of our range grow. However, underlying this is the desire to help make the nut snacking category bigger than the potato crisp category in the UK as a the macro benefit on the health of the nation of a switch like this would be huge - 65million kgs LESS carbs consumed, 46m kgs MORE fibre consumed and 31.5m kgs MORE protein.

Kevan is the ultimate DIY tippler! After an anti-food waste experiment, he and his wife were so delighted with the result that 5 years later they took it to market. Father of a footballer and a saxophonist, Kevan is just the kind of hard working #BoroughBoxHero we want to shout about! Find out all about him and his delicious homegrown fruit liqueurs.

My wife and I used to make a bit of sloe gin a long time ago. We had a freezer break at home with some frozen raspberries in it. Not wanting to waste anything, I found a recipe for Raspberry vodka so we gave it a go to use them up. It tasted sublime so we started making other flavours from other homegrown fruits! Jump forward 5 years and I decided to set up my own company producing premium liqueurs.

Tell us about your most memorable day as a dad!

The day they were both born of course! With so many memories, to choose from my greatest memories will always be watching and hearing my son play his sax with our local big band and I turn out rain or shine to watch my daughter play football for the local girl's team.

Where do you see your brand in 5 years?

I'm optimistic Fruity Tipples will become the go-to brand for great-tasting liqueurs and cocktail kits. I hope we can create employment opportunities and become a bigger supplier to the growing cocktail scene in our towns and cities.

Award-winning Sky Wave Gin founder Andy began as ginthusiast, studied all he could and here we are now, shouting about him as much as we can! Through floods and camping he and his family business has grown into a fantastic young gin brand. One word: ginspired!

What was the initial inspiration for Kromanti Rum?

I come from a small island in the caribbean that has retained many african traditions through oral history, customs and family secrets. The desire to modernise these traditions and share with the world is the driver behind the business.

What was the initial inspiration for your product?

As life-long gin drinkers, we couldn’t find the perfect gin so we decided to make it! We took ourselves to gin school and hit on a rather fabulous recipe, which we then refined and which is the very same recipe which, only 18 months later, was crowned The World’s Best Contemporary Gin at the World Gin Awards!

What’s your ideal type of Father’s Day foodie gift?

A fabulous gin, obviously, but I’d also really enjoy some hand-made chocolates!

There are so many! Perhaps the day my two were born, or the day I first met my step daughter.  But I’m always impressed by their resilience, so I’m going to go with the day our tent collapsed, flooded and was almost destroyed in a near-hurricane, and the children just got on with helping to fix the problem in the most appalling of storm conditions, without a word of complaint.

Where do you see your brand in 5 years?

In all the premium outlets and portals in the land, and possibly across the globe, but still produced by us in our distillery in Oxfordshire. But I wouldn’t turn down more help with the bottling and labelling!
