Artisan Tea & Spice

Our passion for teas, spices and salts comes from out more than twenty years of global business travel, and an enormous interest in food and drink. Vee and I have set up this business so that we can share some of the marvelous things that we have tasted, eaten and drunk over the years from around the world. My name is Johnnie and my big passion is teas – whether it’s white, green, black and rooibos, as well as herbal teas or tisanes, hot and cold, I drink pots of tea in a day. We have a cupboard-full of teas of many types and one day after a trip we thought it would be great to source them ourselves. I am keen on health benefits of tea, for example with rooibos or redbush tea from Africa; there is lots of published evidence around the benefits of tea. We've tried to bring together a wide selection of teas, blends and fruit blends from around the world and there are more on the way. My interest in edible salts is unusual, because for years I have avoided any added salt. Yet on my travels I have come across several that are now in our range where I loved the taste and flavour they created. I used to work near the Camargue in Southern France and fell in love with the light, flaked crystals that are harvested from there. And the rest is history – you’ll see that we have tried to take our customers on a global journey with all our salts and indeed with the rest of our products. We have enjoyed seaweed for many years, either with sushi or sashimi dishes or alone; South East Asian cultures have long embraced seaweed as a super-food and enjoy its rich umami taste – known as the fifth member of all the tastes. With a range of products from closer to home we are building on the use of seaweed by the Romans and the Celts in baking and cooking some fine dishes. Vee has embodied the essences of India which is reflected in his food creations. Not surprisingly, he is a chemist by training and his passion is spices and in particular how to create and build flavours into the dishes. Born in the UK, he moved to India as a child and after over 30 years, returned to the UK with learnings in traditional cuisine from around the world and a keen interest in how spices enrich life’s senses. His use of spices to create flavours in food is a combination of both a learned art and innovation with new tastes and he hopes to share this with you. We have chosen our spice selection at Artisan Tea & Spice from many places around the world, bringing together a combination of Asian, Middle East and Western flavours in one place. Historically, recipes and the use of spices has survived culturally through the ages and each of these combinations of spices imparts a different taste.
